“I want to tell a story, capture the essence of movement within the stillness of drawing. I want to give substance to the oneiric world and imprint the memories enclosed within me in a piece of art”
Hi! I’m Alice d’Apolito (aka Lice-works), an Italian artist living and working in Leeds. My practice is a continuous process of self-creation, bridging the gap between physical reality and an oneiric, dream-like world.
My works are autobiographical, exploring womanhood, personal experiences, and the nostalgia of travels. I am deeply inspired by the quiet strength of childhood memories—symbolised by my childhood pet, Fulmine—and the slow, deliberate pace of my current companion, my pet snails. Through my work, I give substance to long-gone memories and transient dreams.
Influenced by Japanese culture, Surrealism, and Expressionists like Egon Schiele, my technique is defined by clean lines, bold blocks of vivid colour, and pale, expressive faces that act as my own alter ego. My latest woodcuts and paintings focus on the idea of “suspense”;—using voluminous silhouettes and shrouded forms to create an atmospheric mystery. Within this, there is always a whimsical element, a playful touch that invites curiosity in the unknown.
As a self-taught oil painter, I work on wood for its substantiality. As a material that was once alive, it brings an organic energy to my pieces that canvas cannot replicate. The wood grain acts as a living foundation for my dreams, allowing me to create a permanent weight for fleeting feelings.
With a background in Cinema, Photography (I.S.A. Fellini), and Animation (International Comics School of Padova), my work is rooted in storytelling and clear, direct imagery. My art has been exhibited internationally and published in various magazines. Whether through an oil painting or an animation, my goal is to capture the depth of human experience through a lens of calm, whimsical, and surrealist beauty.
